Most authors never get to talk to a literary agent. You're about to talk to one who also cofounded a publishing house.

Literary agents spend their days deciding which books get a shot at the biggest publishers in the world and which ones don’t. They’re not usually giving out their playbook for free on a Friday morning.

But Anthony Arnove isn’t a typical agent, and this isn’t your typical webinar.

Anthony Arnove founded Roam Agency in 2002 and has spent more than two decades placing books with major publishers across fifty countries. At the same time, Anthony co-founded Haymarket Books—one of the most respected independent publishers in the country, after spending seven years at the independent publisher South End Press. Anthony knows that the Big 5 aren’t the right destination for every book or every author, but he also believes there’s a time and place when they make sense. Figuring out who goes where? That’s part of the magic and a perspective you almost never get access to in a single conversation

Join us for this free, 40-minute conversation with Anthony Arnove, someone who understands what it takes to compete at the highest levels of publishing and who genuinely believes in what independent publishers can offer. You’ll learn what nonfiction authors actually need to know before they pitch a book—to anyone.

1

Understand what literary agents actually want to see in a proposal.

Agents aren't just looking for a good book. They're evaluating your idea's market potential, your credibility as an author, and whether your proposal gives them what they need to pitch publishers on your behalf. Anthony will walk you through what makes a proposal land and what gets it passed over.
2

Learn how to pitch directly to independent publishers.

Working with a literary agent isn't the only path to a publishing contract. Anthony will explain how to identify and approach independent publishers directly, what they're looking for that's different from the Big 5, and why going indie might actually be the smarter move for your book.
3

Know when to pursue a Big 5 publisher and when not to.

Big publishers offer reach, prestige, and marketing muscle. Independent publishers offer flexibility, mission alignment, and often a closer working relationship. Anthony will help you think through which path makes sense for your project, your goals, and your timeline.

What Sets This Session Apart?

Rather than a lecture, a one-way webinar, or a sales pitch, this event is a conversation. A real one. You will be on audio and video with other attendees, and you will be able to ask Anthony your specific questions about your book, your proposal, your situation.

This is a rare chance to get direct, honest answers from someone who has spent decades on both sides of the publishing table: as an agent who has placed books with the world’s largest publishers, and as a co-founder of one of the most respected independent publishing houses in the country.
